Bright sunshine, warm temperatures, and long hours of daylight make summer a great time to get outside as much as possible. Most summer activities, such as picnics and pool parties, take place outdoors. You may be ready to entertain, but your dirty barbecue, chipped patio furniture, and outdoor fabrics may have fallen by the wayside after hibernating during the winter months.
Your outdoor living space is an extension of your home and should not be ignored. Cleaning your home should not stop at the back door. The following cleaning tips will help you get your yard clean and ready for summer fun. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions before cleaning furniture and upholstery. The use of inappropriate products may result in damage to the product. Do not pressure wash, use chlorine bleach or abrasive cleaners unless instructed to do so.
Outdoor Furniture
Outdoor tables, chairs, and lounge chairs are made of materials that can withstand heat, sun, rain, and wind. However, after spending the winter in a shed or garage, furniture can accumulate dirt, dust, and even cobwebs. A hose is usually sufficient to remove small amounts of accumulation. If the dirt has penetrated the surface, turn the house upside down and give it a quick wash. For more thorough cleaning, mix 1/4 cup of mild dishwashing detergent with 1 gallon of warm water. Use a sponge or soft bristle brush to thoroughly scrub the surface of the furniture. After rinsing, pat dry with a soft cloth. Your guests and their clothes will thank you.
Fabric Care
Fabrics intended for outdoor use are usually chemically treated during the production process to increase their resistance to dirt and moisture. These weather-resistant materials are designed for outdoor use. In most cases, simply brushing the surface with a soft brush and rinsing with water is sufficient to make it suitable for outdoor use. If more thorough cleaning is needed, the removable cover can be machine washed in cold water with a mild household detergent that does not contain bleach, then air-dried. If hand washing, soak the fabric in a solution of 1/4 cup of neutral liquid soap and 1 gallon of warm water. Rinse and let dry naturally.
Umbrellas
More than just a practical item, patio umbrellas can add a touch of sophistication and whimsy to your outdoor decor. Before storing your umbrella for the new season, clean it with a brush and a solution of mild soap and warm water. Avoid harsh detergents and boiling water, as they strip the protective layer from the umbrella’s canvas. If the umbrella is very dirty or moldy, clean it with a solution of 1/2 cup of bleach and 5 liters of warm water.
Care
To keep your fabrics looking great during the summer months, clean them once a week to remove dust, dirt, and body oils. Any spills or stains should be wiped up immediately with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Some liquids, such as sunscreens, can cause discoloration. Some fabrics may have a water-repellent finish, but this loses its effect over time. Information on how to restore the water-repellent effect is given in the care instructions.
Protecting your furniture
Cover your furniture when not in use or store it indoors in case of heavy rain. Place furniture in an upright position to allow accumulated water to drain away.
Preparing the barbecue
There’s nothing more unsightly than a grease-stained grill. Keep your grill as clean as your oven. To easily clean the grill grates, heat them with the lid closed for a few minutes until they are hot. Clean the grill with a long-handled brass brush to remove crumbling debris. The griddle can also be washed in hot, soapy water. It is best to let it soak for a while to loosen dirt and grease. There are different types of grills, such as cast iron, porcelain, and stainless steel. So check the manufacturer’s instructions to see if there are other cleaning methods.
Clean the outside of the grill with a cleaning solution, warm water, and a sponge. Allow to dry completely after rinsing. To keep the exterior surface of stainless steel grills shiny, clean them with a cleaner designed for stainless steel. Never use steel or wire flannel, as it will permanently scratch the surface.
