The bistable LCD display can hold an image without power (zero power) . Crystals can exist in one of two stable orientations and only energy is required to change the image. The bistable LCD display can change color and maintain that color even when power is cut off.

Advantages of bistable LCD

Flicker Free: Eyes are not easily blinded.

Low consumption: no power is needed to maintain the image. Converted into an e-book, 20,000 pages can be read with 2 AAA 3V batteries.

Possible high resolution that can reach 200 dpi. You can achieve a grayscale of 256.

Possible low cost and a green screen: no polarizer (for some bistable LCDs), color filter, and backlight needed.

High contrast and wide viewing angle: The contrast ratio of the monochrome bistable LCD screen is up to 25:1 , viewing angle of about 80 degrees in all directions.

For cholesteric materials with positive dielectric anisotropy, the molecules in the planar structure will readily realign in parallel to an applied electric field, generating the reflective layered structure. To break the helical layer structure is to apply voltage around 6V to 30V. To switch from the focal conical state to the flat state, an even higher voltage (35 V) is needed. The exact voltage required for switching depends on the cell spacing and the dielectric anisotropy of the liquid crystals. The focal state is less stable than the flat state.

Bistable LCD Limitations

The refresh rate is slow: 2-3 seconds

Between each screen refresh, the screen should refresh with a dark screen.

Bistable liquid crystal materials require protection from ultraviolet light . A UV-blocking material with a minimum 98% cutoff at 380 nm and lower spectral components is required.

The finished product design must incorporate a transparent cover such as acrylic, polycarbonate, etc. to protect the display area of the screen. Place the protective cover as close as possible to the flip-flop display module. . The protective cover must be thick enough to resist flexing.

Adding an anti-glare or anti-reflective film or surface finish to the viewing side of the protective cover can improve optical performance.

The power used to refresh the screen is quite high. So it won’t be worth it for an app if the screen needs to refresh more than 20-50 times depending on the battery used. Bistable display technology has been used for shelf labels and electronic readers. Bistable LCDs require the use of a voltage amplifier . Design in some environments must be cautious, examples: explosive gas. Bistable LCDs are limited to one character color and one background color.

Bistable LCDs are reflective and do not require a backlight . This can be a disadvantage in areas with dark ambient lighting. If lighting has to be used, only the front light can be used instead of the back light. It can be expensive and lose its key advantage of low power.

Bistable LCD made by customer

Any type of monochrome and multi-color LCD Screen, including digits, character and graphic flip-flop LCDs can be customized . Please contact Orient Display support team for more details.

Compared to electronic ink, the flip-flop is flexible for a custom solution. Tool cost and unit prices are lower than e-ink. Bistable is also flexible for MOQ. But there is a big disadvantage compared with e-ink: the backlight of e-ink is closer to paper, which makes e-ink widely used in e-books (Kindle for Amazon), which is the most popular market. great for zero power displays.
